So, as per usual, my ‘plans’ don’t go as planned. I most certainly do not have anything figured out. I might be a experienced traveler, but that doesn’t really mean much, and sometimes I’m still a hot mess. Day one of my journey and I’ve managed to barely sleep the past few nights, get a cold, leave my laptop charger at home, and someone thought it was a good idea to set up a new phone late the night before they caught their early morning flight.
I always get a little pre-travel anxiety. Maybe it’s the unknown, which can be big and intimidating. Plus, not feeling well intensifies everything!! Whenever I’m sick I think I’m always going to feel that way, can’t see the light. Needless to say, when my flight to Costa Rica was canceled (volcanic ash), and I got stuck in the artic tundra of Toronto without a coat, I was like, really?
I think the best thing I can do is to laugh at myself. To have a sense of humor and awareness about my feelings. My flight was cancelled (Air Canada), there’s nothing I can do about it, but accept that I’m in cold Canada for a day. I was getting irritated (plus I don’t feel good) so I sent my best friend a video message to discover that I’d been walking around with caramel macchiato on my nose for an hour. Awesome.
Little things like this remind me it’s not so serious. Everything works out, new laptop chargers can be bought, and my feelings (whatever they may be) won’t kill me, flights are rescheduled, and I can crash at a nice hotel in Toronto tonight. In reality, everything is unknown, regardless of where I am. I wouldn’t know what would happen even if I was still in NYC. Note to self – enjoy the moment. Enjoy the journey.
